Microcement is known for being a highly resistant material. It is especially durable in terms of its resistance to abrasion, as it is able to withstand the constant wear and friction to which it is exposed on floors, stairs, kitchen countertops, etc. Due to its hardness, microcement is highly resistant to scratches and erosion, making it ideal for high traffic areas and constant use.

Regarding its compression resistance, it is worth noting that microcement is a very dense and solid material, capable of supporting large weights without suffering deformations or cracks. Although its thickness is very thin compared to other coatings, its high density and mechanical resistance make it an excellent option for surfaces that must support heavy loads, such as floors and countertops.

In addition, microcement is available in a wide variety of colors and textures, allowing it to adapt to any decorative style. Its finish is waterproof and non-slip, making it ideal for wet areas such as bathrooms and kitchens.

Now that we know to a good extent the decorative possibilities that microcement floors offer, it is time to learn how this coating is applied on walkable surfaces.

How to apply microcement on tiled floors

Microcement is an effective solution for renovating tiled floors without the need to remove them. Although the application process may seem complex, with the right products and following the steps correctly, it is possible to achieve a spectacular and lasting result.

1- Grout with the preparation microcement

Grouting with preparation microcement is a crucial step in the application of microcement on tiled floors. This material offers superior mechanical resistances and is perfect for preparing the surface. It is important to apply it to prevent the joints from being marked in the coating later. Once applied, it is necessary to let it dry for at least 24 hours before continuing with the next step.

2- Apply primer for non-absorbent surfaces

After grouting with preparation microcement, it is important to apply a primer for non-absorbent floors and place the fiberglass mesh. At Luxury Concrete, we recommend the use of Primacrete Plus, which facilitates the adhesion of the microcement with the existing support, while the mesh prevents the appearance of possible cracks and fissures. It is essential to let this layer dry properly, a time that ranges between 30 minutes and 24 hours, to ensure an optimal result.

3- Application of unpigmented preparation microcement

The application of the first layer of preparation microcement is a key step to provide hardness to the coating and facilitate the subsequent application of the finishing product. It is important to apply an unpigmented layer, as this will allow to correct any imperfection before applying the final layer. Once this layer is applied, it is necessary to let it dry for 12 hours so that the surface is completely dry before continuing.

4- Second layer of Primacrete Plus primer

The application of the second coat of primer for absorbent surfaces is essential to prevent the joints of the tiles from being marked in the microcement. It must be allowed to dry properly during the time recommended by the manufacturer, which ranges between 30 minutes and 24 hours, to ensure an optimal result.

5- Second layer of preparation microcement with pigment

The second layer of the microcement preparation is fundamental to achieve the necessary hardness of the floor and to establish the bases for a quality coating. It is important to apply a layer with pigment, as this will allow to correct any imperfection that has remained in the previous layer. After applying it, it is necessary to let this layer dry for 24 hours.

6- Application of two finishing microcement layers

With the surface prepared and the preparation microcement applied, it's time to put two finishing layers. Concrete Floor is a good bet to achieve natural and high-quality finishes on indoor floors.

It is important to allow a drying time of 3 hours between the first and second coat and let the second one dry for 24 hours before continuing with the sealing of the surface. It is crucial to apply the second finishing coat in a direction perpendicular to the first coat to achieve a uniform and streak-free finish.

During the application, it is important to take into account the humidity and ambient temperature, as they can affect the drying time and the final appearance of the finish.

7- Sealing of the microcement floor

The sealing of the microcement floor is the last step in the application. It is important to protect, waterproof and reinforce the pavement with a suitable sealing varnish.

For this, it is recommended to apply two coats of Primacrete Finish, a water-based pore sealer primer to harden the microcement, and two coats of the sealing varnish Concrete Finish WT, specially formulated to provide optimal protection against abrasion, dirt and moisture.

Once the sealing process is finished, it is important to let the surface dry for at least 48 hours before using the floor again. After this time, you can proceed to clean the surface with specific products for the maintenance of microcement floors, which will help maintain the appearance and durability of the coating in the long term. With these care, the microcement floor will look impeccable for years and will become a decorative and functional element in any space.

How to apply microcement on cement floors

1- Repair any possible cracks in the support

Before starting to apply the microcement on the cement floor, it is essential that it is in perfect condition. If it has cracks, we will need to repair them to achieve a smooth and uniform surface.

For this, we can use a repair mortar for floors, which will allow us to effectively cover the cracks. It is important that we remove all dust and dirt from the surface before proceeding with the repair. In this way, we will achieve better adhesion of the mortar and a more durable and resistant final result.

2- Acrylic resin application for microcement Concrete Resin

Once we have repaired the cracks and have the floor clean and level, we will proceed to apply the Concrete Resin acrylic resin. This resin is used to consolidate the surface and improve the adhesion of the microcement. It is especially recommended on very absorbent floors, such as those made of cement.

The Concrete Resin is applied with a brush or roller in a single layer. It is important that we respect the drying times recommended by the manufacturer before continuing with the process.

3- Two layers of preparation microcement

Once we have the dry and consolidated acrylic resin, we will proceed to apply two layers of preparation microcement.

The first layer is applied with a notched trowel, spreading it evenly over the entire surface of the floor. Before it dries, we will place the fiberglass mesh to reinforce the surface. The mesh should cover the entire floor and be well adhered to the first layer of microcement.

Once the mesh is placed, we will let the first layer dry for about 3 hours. After that time, we will apply the second layer of microcement preparation, spreading it with the same notched trowel. It is important that the surface is completely smooth and without imperfections. We will let this layer also dry for about 3 hours before continuing with the next step.

4- Two layers of finishing microcement

At this point, we will proceed to apply the two finishing layers of microcement. The first layer will be applied with pigment, spreading it with a smooth trowel over the entire surface of the floor. Before it dries, we will let about 3 hours pass.

After this time, we will apply the second layer of finishing microcement, also with pigment. In this case, we will let the surface dry for 24 hours to ensure that the microcement has completely hardened.

5 - Sealing of the microcement floor

Once we have applied the two finishing layers of microcement, we will proceed to seal the floor. For this, we will use the pore filler primer Primacrete Finish and the sealing varnish Concrete Finish WT.

The pore filler primer Primacrete Finish is applied in two coats, with a brush or roller, and is left to dry for 12 hours before applying the sealing varnish. This pore filler primer is a product that is used to prevent excessive absorption of the sealing varnish by the microcement, thus improving its adhesion and durability. Primacrete Finish also contributes to the homogenization of the color of the applied microcement.

Finally, the Concrete Finish WT sealer varnish is also applied in two coats, with a brush or roller, ensuring that the floor is completely dry before doing so. It is important that the coats are thin and uniform to avoid air bubbles and ensure perfect protection of the microcement floor. In addition, Concrete Finish WT provides excellent resistance to wear, stains, and traffic, making the floor an easy-to-clean and very durable surface.

How to clean a microcement floor

To keep a microcement floor in good condition, it is essential to keep it clean. For this, it is important to take into account the following tips:

- Avoid the use of abrasive products: microcement is a delicate material that does not tolerate abrasive or acidic products, as they can damage the protective layer and the finish. Therefore, it is recommended to use mild and neutral cleaning products.

- Sweep or vacuum the floor regularly: it is important to remove dust and dirt regularly to prevent them from accumulating on the surface of the microcement and damaging it.

- Use a well-wrung mop: when cleaning a microcement floor, it is important not to leave too much water on the surface.

- Clean stains immediately: if any liquid is spilled or a stain occurs on the floor, it is important to clean it immediately to prevent it from penetrating the surface of the microcement. For tougher stains, a gentle cleaner and brush can be used.

- Avoid the use of sharp objects: microcement is a material sensitive to scratches. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid the use of sharp or pointed objects on the floor surface.

How to maintain a microcement floor

In addition to regular cleaning, there are other measures that can be taken to maintain a microcement floor in good condition in the long term:

- Perform regular maintenance: to keep the microcement in good condition in the long term, it is recommended to perform regular maintenance every 3 or 4 years. This maintenance consists of applying a new layer of sealant and varnish to protect the surface of the floor.

- Having a professional expert in microcement for repairs: if any damage occurs to the microcement floor, it is important to contact a professional to carry out the necessary repairs. Trying to repair the damage on your own can be a mistake that could worsen the situation. An expert will be able to assess the extent of the damage and apply the necessary techniques to repair it.

How much does it cost to install a microcement floor? Price per m2

When we establish eye contact with a microcement-coated floor, we first realize that we are dealing with a material of very high value, both aesthetically and technically speaking.

This may lead us to think the same about its monetary cost, but from Luxury Concrete® we recommend letting yourself be carried away by the magnificent sensations that the surfaces in question give off since it is difficult to determine, at first glance, the price of said material.

This is because many more variables are involved in an application than the cost of the product. Thus, one must ask how many meters have been covered, how many applicators were necessary to do it, what was the condition of the original support and if it had to be repaired...

For this reason, and for the second time, we emphasize that when faced with a special pavement, that shines by itself, we advocate for putting all your senses into admiring it instead of thinking about its price. Of course, if you want to experience these sensations in your home and cover your floors with microcement, do not hesitate to contact us.

Possible problems with microcement floors

Despite all the benefits that a material like microcement has, it also has some drawbacks.

1 - Appearance of cracks due to poorly conditioned supports. Over time, after the application of microcement, cracks may appear. This is because, at the time of application, the surface was not in an optimal state. In these cases, it must be repaired or properly cleaned, depending on the case, to prevent irregularities from appearing in the long term.

2 - Successful applications are only carried out by expert professionals. To achieve the best results, it is necessary to have qualified applicators with the necessary skills and who do not cease in their training on the latest trends and the most innovative products, like those that make up the team of approved applicators from Luxury Concrete®.

3 - Cracks due to structural vibrations. In some cases, this is insurmountable and cracks may appear. In the case of the first two, they can occur due to movements in the building itself, due to vibrations or settlements, even if the material used is of high quality.

4 - Humidity. There are two cases that we must avoid if we do not want humidity to become a part of more of our surfaces. Firstly, it must be corrected from the original supports before applying the microcement on them, otherwise the new coating would copy this humidity. Secondly, it is necessary to get the primer right. For example, if the area is in permanent contact with water, you will have to choose the indicated product, which adapts to the characteristics of the space in question.
