How to make a microcement floor

Now that we have gone through the decorative possibilities offered by microcement floors, it is time to find out how this covering is applied to walkable surfaces.

Application of microcement on tiled floors

1- Grouting with preparatory microcement

To grout the tiles, it is necessary to apply preparatory microcement to avoid marking the joints in the tiling. Concrete Base offers superior mechanical resistance and is perfect for preparing the surface. This layer needs a drying time of 24 hours.

2- Applying primer for non-absorbent surfaces

Once the grout has been grouted, the next step is to apply an adhesion promoter or primer for non-absorbent floors and place the fibreglass mesh for microcement. At Luxury Concrete we use Primacrete Plus to facilitate the adhesion of the microcement to the existing substrate, while the mesh prevents the appearance of possible cracks and fissures. This layer needs a drying time of between 30 minutes and 24 hours.

3- Application of unpigmented preparatory microcement

With the surface already prepared, the first layer of preparatory microcement should be applied to give hardness to the coating. This layer facilitates the subsequent application of the finishing microcement. This layer must be left to dry for 12 hours.

4- Second coat of Primacrete Plus primer

The second coat of primer for absorbent surfaces is applied to avoid marking the tile joints in the microcement. The drying time is also between 30 minutes and 24 hours.

5- Second layer of microcement preparation with pigment

The second layer of microcement preparation is essential to make the floor hard. With this step we lay the foundations for a quality coating. This layer must be left to dry for 24 hours.

6- Applying two coats of finishing microcement

With the surface prepared and the preparatory microcement applied, it is time to apply two coats of finishing microcement. In the case of indoor floors, Concrete Floor is a good bet to achieve natural and high quality finishes. Between the first and second coat, a drying time of 3 hours should be allowed. The second coat should be left to dry for up to 24 hours before sealing the surface.

7- Sealing the microcement floor

Sealing the surface is the last step in the application of microcement on the floor. This protects, waterproofs and reinforces the floors. In addition, the final finish is embellished. To do this, two coats of Primacrete Finish, a water-based primer to harden the microcement, and two coats of Concrete Finish WT sealing varnish must be applied.

Application of microcement in cement floors

1- Repair any cracks in the substrate

If we are going to cover a cement floor with cracks, the first step is to repair them until the substrate is level, clean and free of grease.

2- Applying acrylic resin for Concrete Resin microcement

Once we have ensured that there are no cracks, the second step is to consolidate the surface where the microcement is going to be applied. Concrete Resin acrylic resin is especially indicated to facilitate the adherence of microcement on very absorbent floors, such as cement floors.

3- Two coats of microcement preparation

Two coats of finishing microcement should be applied. With the first one, the fibreglass mesh is placed and allowed to dry for 3 hours. The second layer also needs the same drying time before applying the finishing microcement.

4- Two coats of finishing microcement

The two coats of finishing microcement are applied with pigment. A drying time of 3 hours is required between the first and second coat. The second coat must be left to dry for 24 hours.

5 - Sealing the microcement floor

As with non-absorbent surfaces, the sealing process requires two coats of Primacrete Finish primer and two coats of Concrete Finish WT sealer varnish.
